Testimony of God vs Charm of Man

Written by Warren |Posted on December 9, 2008 | Comments

“And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God.” 1 Corinthians 2:1 (NASB)

In 1 Corinthians 1:26-31 (see previous devotional), Paul presents that redemption cannot be obtained through human wisdom. Now Paul here presents that redemption cannot be presented through human wisdom.

Paul from day one did not come with excellence of speech. He did not start his ministry by first charming the public in Corinth and then going down deeper to the meat of the Testimony of Christ. He wasn’t using human intellect to convince them. Because we are not being convinced by human intellect, charm or logic. We are being convinced by the Word of God. And God’s Word unifies and edifies while human opinions (such as charm, eloquence of speech, human wisdom) confuse and divides.

Let me explain why human opinion divides. If there are over a billion people all over the world, then there would be over a billion unique opinions floating around us. Opinions are products of our own unique personal experience. And all people do not have exactly the same experience. Therefore opinion has no authority in whatsoever to convince people to be converted to Christianity.

We also have to consider that in the city of Corinth (which is located in southern Greece-the home of the intellects such as Plato, etc.) there was a high demand for wisdom. And we know in business terms the principle of supply and demand – there won’t be any supply if there isn’t no demand because supply is determined by demand.

If people wants to hear opinions from speakers, its easy to find one who can supply that need especially in our time. We do not have much demand for preachers who preaches the Word of God. But to find a speaker that preaches the Word of God in the world of demanding human opinions is a rare jewel. And it is only through the testimony of God that one can be saved and not through the eloquence of speech.
