“Husbands, love your wives” Ephesians 5:25
How much should we husbands ought to love our wives? See next sentence of the verse: “as Christ loved the church.” How much did Christ loved the Church? see next sentence of the verse: Jesus “gave himself up for her.” Loving our wives is about Christ loving the Church even if the Church isn’t lovable. In fact, the Church is rebellious and haters of God by nature. But inspite of our hateful nature towards God, He still chose to love us to demonstrate to us that His love is not determined or dependent on our performance. He loved us because He chooses to. He loves us to the point that He sent His one and only Son to die for us on the cross.
Our wives may not be that ideal person to deserve our love. Nor should we deserve love from God who is Holy and pure. But Christ not only loved us, He demonstrated His love through His death for us even when we were yet sinners.
Loving our wives does not mean we love them when they do good things to us. It means we ought to love them even in their worst condition. That is how Christ loved the Church. And that is how we husbands ought to love our wives.
